6 A computational model of nonword repetition , immediate serial recall , and nonword learning

چکیده

A computational model is presented that tackles the issue of serial ordering both across word forms (as in list recall) and within word forms (as in nonword repetition). The model was set up to simulate performance in these two tasks. A number of patterns of relationship between performance in these tasks then fell out of the model, including the well-documented correlation between performance in the two tasks, and the typical pro®le of impairment in the ``pure STM'' neuropsychological syndrome. The model thus provides a concretely instantiated means of thinking about relationships between list recall and nonword repetition, and has the potential to play a useful role in investigation of these relationships.

Why Is Word Learning Related to List Memory? Empirical and Neuropsychological Tests of a Computational Account

A growing body of evidence indicates that human word learning, nonword repetition, and immediate serial recall (ISR) abilities are related in some way (e.g., Baddeley et al., 1998). It seems clear why word learning might be related to nonword repetition: every known word was once a nonword to a particular learner, so greater facility in processing nonwords should lead to greater facility in eve...

Examining the relationship between word learning, nonword repetition, and immediate serial recall in adults.

Two experiments examined whether the association between word-learning, nonword repetition, and immediate serial recall observed in children also exists in normal adults. The experiments also introduce a novel paradigm for studying word-learning. Experiment 1 studied the performance of 52 adults in nonword repetition, immediate serial recall, and word-learning tasks, examining the correlation b...

Serial position effects in nonword repetition

A growing body of research has emphasized the linkage between performance in immediate serial recall of lists, nonword repetition, and word learning. Recently, it has been reported that primacy and recency effects are obtained in repetition of individual syllables within nonwords (Gupta, in press). Five experiments examined whether such within-nonword primacy and recency effects are attributabl...

Word Learning and Verbal Short-Term Memory: A Computational Account

Recent behavioral evidence suggests that human vocabulary acquisition processes and verbal short-term memory abilities may be related (Gathercole & Baddeley, 1993). Investigation of this relationship has considerable significance for understanding of human language, of working memory, and of the relationship between shortand long-term memory systems. This paper presents a computational model of...

Does phonological short-term memory causally determine vocabulary learning? Toward a computational resolution of the debate

The relationship between nonword repetition ability and vocabulary size and vocabulary learning has been a topic of intense research interest and investigation over the last two decades, following the demonstration that nonword repetition accuracy is predictive of vocabulary size (Gathercole & Baddeley, 1989). However, the nature of this relationship is not well understood. One prominent accoun...
